Looking for something to do?

Retired Sergeant Andrew Nelson writes:

"I am presently attempting to put together the definitive guide to the history of cloth insignia of NYC Law Enforcement (NYPD, HAPD, TPD and DOC). I presently have in my personal collection nearly 1000 NYC Law Enforcement  patches, and know of another two hundred or so that I am missing. My goal is to record the history of this insignia so that future generations of historians and collectors will have some form of historical reference.

Cloth insignia has never been held in any type of esteem, even though it has an extensive history. The current "historians" seem more focused on the shiny stuff like badges.  If steps are not taken to record the history now, it will be lost forever. Like the fate of the old NYPD Telegraph Bureau patch. If you have information and would care to help me, it would be greatly appreciated and you would receive credit in helping to keep cloth insignia history alive. I'm especially interested in the dates that patches came into use, who designed them and any photos that might show some of the more older or obscure patches in use. Please feel free to contact me direct at: huntzman@consolidated.net  Thank you in advance.

Best wishes & stay safe,
Andrew Nelson

Visit some great NYC Landmarks:

Statue of Liberty

Did you know that the "Crown" is open for limited visitation!  You will need special passes for this rare opportunity. Only about 200 persons per day will be permitted access.

NYC Police Dept Museum

Kids always uncover something cool at The New York City Police Museum.  They can test out the sirens used in an NYPD patrol car, take their friend’s “mug shot” in a police line-up and see what life is like on the other side of the bars in a real jail cell.  On display in the Weapons and Notorious Criminals exhibit are Al Capone’s Tommy gun, and infamous bank robber Willie Sutton’s handmade lock-picking kit.  Baseball fans will discover the origin of the New York Yankees logo in the original NYPD Medal of Valor.

NYC Transit Museum

The premier museum of New York City transit history. This museum is housed in an old subway station in downtown Brooklyn and features 19 restored subway cars and other exhibits. They also sponsor frequent subway tours, and house the Transit Authority's extensive transit archives, open by appointment

Quita LaCerda  (02/19/51-09/13/09)

Quita was the long time companion of our Sgt At Arms, Phil Feiderlein and was our most ardent supporter at our Parades where she could be seen selling our Raffle Tickets, Belt Buckles and T-Shirts.
